Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services Self-Employment Guide
The Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS) is
enhancing its existing services for individuals who desire to pursue self- employment as their vocational goal. This updated Self-Employment Guide has been developed by a team of ADRS employees, Community Rehabilitation Program (CRP) staff, individuals with disabilities who have attempted self employment and private consultants. This team initially identified factors that have worked for successful self- employment outcomes and enhancements necessary to make self- employment a more viable vocational goal for all individuals.
This manual is intended to provide vocational rehabilitation staff with
guidelines, assessment tools, resources and other information to be used when assisting individuals who express an interest in self-employment. More specifically, it will assist AVRS counselors with determining the feasibility of self-employment for any individual regardless of the severity of their disability (p. 5).
Business Enterprise Program
The Business Enterprise Program ( BEP ) provides qualified blind individuals with job training and employment opportunities through the management and operation of small businesses that provide independence through self-employment.
